How to Become a Certified Drone Pilot

Getting certified to fly drones commercially is more accessible than you might think. Here’s what you need to know about FAA requirements and additional certifications that can boost your earning potential.

FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate

The Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate is the foundation for all commercial drone work in the United States. It’s required for anyone who wants to fly drones for compensation, whether that’s a full-time job, freelance work, or using drones as part of another role.

Minimum Age: 

16 years old

Language:

Must read, write, speak, and understand English.

Knowledge Test:

Pass the “Unmanned Aircraft General – Small (UAG)” exam at an FAA-approved testing center.

Cost:

~$175 for the knowledge test.

Study Time:

Most applicants study 15–20 hours.

Medical Certificate:

Not required (unlike manned aircraft).

Key Part 107 Rules: 

  • Drone must weigh less than 55 pounds
  • Fly only during daylight (or civil twilight with anti-collision lighting)
  • Stay below 400 feet AGL
  • Maintain visual line of sight
  • Don’t fly over people (unless drone meets specific requirements)
  • Operations in controlled airspace require authorization (LAANC or airspace waiver)

 

Since April 2021, Part 107 pilots can fly at night and over people without a waiver, as long as they complete updated recurrent training and meet equipment requirements.
